July 4th, 2019 was a beautiful day in Southern California. Newport Beach had a warm and breezy afternoon.

As our friend and skipper, Rick, poked the nose of the boat out of the harbor, we heard questioning noises from our lady friends about the desirability of rolling around in the high seas. So, we turned around and headed back into the harbor.

Apparently, one of the residents was throwing a dinner party!

There were many parties as folks waited for the fireworks to begin.

As darkness approached, I began thinking about the challenge of getting decent photographs of fireworks from a moving boat. Normally, I shoot fireworks on land, with a tripod, a mid aperture point (f5.6 or f8), and between 1 and 5 second shutter speed. Not possible on a boat! (Unless it’s in drydock.)

And this shot of the “preliminary” bottle rocked from someone’s home proved my point. Still, I thought we might at least get some “colorful points of light.” So, over 500 images later . . .

As you can see, points of light will be the order of the night.

The colors were often beautifully reflected in the water, and on the “windows” of the boat’s cockpit.

Other cities also had fireworks, of course, and some were visible from our position in Newport Beach.
